The electron beam (=EB) is a universal tool for processing metallic materials by electron beam welding, EB drilling and electron beam surface treatment and has been used in industry for many years. The behaviour of the electron beam when it penetrates the material being processed is one of the most important, but also one of the most difficult, parts of EB technology.
Electron beam welding is used for joining metallic materials with normal welding seam depths. The very thin weld seam and its narrow heat affected zones drastically minimises the energy transferred and the distortion to the component as whole. Additive manufacturing EBOADD is one of the most promising production technologies. With electron beam technology, highly complex metallic workpieces can be produced on wire basis cost-efficient and flexibly in just one process step.
The high power density in the focus of 108W/cm2 and over also makes the electron beam ideally suited for drilling.
With the local surface modification (often also "edge layer hardening") in selected ranges of workpiece surfaces, point-exactly and only where necessary, changed characteristics can be produced, as this happens e.g. with the hardening.
At present, non-vacuum electron beam welding is mainly used in Germany for welding aluminium, e.g. for cockpit carriers made of aluminium.
